Sarah Ashlee Barker's Night Ends Early After Scary Injury Against the Dallas Wings
Finding Her Role: SAB's First Season in Los Angeles
Even from her 45-point performance in the Second Round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament (March Madness), people knew Sarah Ashlee Barker was something special. The Ninth-Overall Pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, Barker was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks. Playing behind LA's lead point guard and 5x All-Star Kelsey Plum, Barker would only start 8 games in her rookie season while averaging just over 14 minutes per game. Making the most of the minutes she earned, SAB averaged 3.1 points and 1.9 assists per game in her rookie season for LA. In the Sparks' final game of the season, Barker would put up a career-high (at the time) of 15 points followed by 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal while shooting nearly 60% from the field. This was a promising performance for Barker and LA as she continued to improve and learn from one of the best point guards and scorers in the W (Kelsey Plum). Although many Sparks fans were excited for Barker's future and great potential, SAB would be selected by the Portland Fire in the 2026 Expansion Draft.
Barker's Breakout Season for the Portland Fire
Entering her sophomore season with a fresh start to shine in Portland, fans grew very excited to see how Barker would play with a new group and new role. Just a few games into the 2026 WNBA season, Barker would work her way into the starting lineup and became a crucial piece to Portland Fire's growing success. Prior to her injury, SAB was averaging 11.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game for the Fire. One of Portland's most consistent and reliable players not only did Barker bring consistent scoring to the table, but also electric defense. All throughout the first half of this season, several of Barker's teammates as well as Head Coach Alex Sarama have shown high praise for SAB's energy, positivity, and hard work on and off the court. It was through Barker's on court success and character that she became a player that Portland could lean on in any situation for some completive fire.
Breaking Down the Injury Sequence
Coming off a dominant performance against the Minnesota Lynx on July 18, 2026, with a 21-point, 4 rebound, and 4 assist clinic, Barker was looking to continue to find her spots on offense while also quieting the scoring ability of Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd with her incredible defense. However, SAB's night in the Portland Fire's matchup with the Dallas Wings was unfortunately cut very short. Gaining possession from a tip from teammate Megan DiLeo winning the opening jump, Sarah Ashlee Barker showed no fear and wasted no time as she drove to the basket for an easy layup. The next four minutes for SAB were nothing short of her best work as she made the Wings work hard to score as she haunted them on defense. Barker would also go on to set up her teammates to create their own shots as she recorded 2 assists. While Sarah Ashlee Barker was on pace to have yet another great game, this matchup with Dallas as well as potentially the rest of her season was cut short. In attempt to attack the basket, Barker received a pass from Carla Leite in the paint while guarded by lockdown defender, Azzi Fudd. As SAB went to plant her left foot while simultaneously shooting, she immediately fell to the ground clutching her left knee. As the arena went silent, Barker remained down for several minutes before walking off the court with assistance. From just a glance at the replay, it is almost certain that SAB has suffered a torn ACL, a critical and season-ending injury. Although the specificalities of Barker's injury have not been confirmed, the Portland Fire did announce that she will undergo an MRI. Despite losing one of their cornerstones, the Portland Fire fought hard and nearly outplayed the Dallas Wings. In the end, the Fire lost not only this matchup in a close 97-101 contest, but they also lost one of the biggest gamechangers on the roster.
