Los Angeles Sparks Upgrade Kate Martin to Standard Contract

In a season full of many highs and lows just a few months in, Kate Martin has earned a Standard Contract with the Los Angeles Sparks.

Martin's 2026 Season Summary (Thus Far)

An Unexpected Waiver

Just days before the Golden State Valkyries' regular season opener, Kate Martin was waived from the team she called home. This came as a surprise to both Martin and WNBA fans as she quickly became a fan favorite when she touched down in Golden State after being selected in the 2025 WNBA Expansion draft by the Valks. Prior to getting waived, Martin participated in the Valkyries' preseason matchup with the Seattle Storm where she contributed 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists. Martin wouldn't make any other preseason appearances due to a quad strain that likely lead to Golden State's desire to part ways.

New Beginnings in LA

Less than a week after getting waived by the Valkyries, Martin signed a developmental contract with the Los Angeles Sparks. A developmental contract is a contract specifically available to players that are yet to play in their fourth WNBA season. Such contracts allow players to practice with their signed team while also having the opportunity to compete in up to 12 games. A developmental player can be signed to a Standard Contract at any point in the season if desired by the coach. Prior to her contract upgrade, Martin competed in 10/12 of her permitted games as a developmental player. It was in these 10 games that Martin averaged 2.6 points per game. That said, she was on a heavy minute's restriction by coach Lynne Roberts.

Hard Work Pays Off- Literally

Hustle, and effort are never something questioned when you think about Kate Martin. Often described as a hard worker and selfless player, Martin will always give it her all on and off the court. This is reflected in the way she was able to earn herself an official spot on the Los Angeles Sparks. After waiving fellow developmental player, Laura Ziegler and rookie, Ta'Niya Latson, Sparks fans and WNBA fans knew what was coming. By waiving these players, the Los Angeles Sparks had made more than enough room to offer Kate Martin a standard contract spot. Considering that Sparks' star guard Kelsey Plum is still sidelined with a left leg injury, Martin could see increased time on the court as the Sparks are in need of more guards to help fill the void alongside Rae Burrell, Ariel Atkins, and Erica Wheeler. Although we don't know coach Lynne Roberts plan for Martin just yet, one thing we do know is that Martin is going to give the Sparks her everything with this new opportunity.

What's Next for Martin and the Sparks?

Kate Martin and the Los Angeles Sparks take on the Seattle Storm tonight at home. As they look to maximize the homecourt advantage, will the Sparks be able to start off the home stretch strong? Will Kate Martin get big minutes early or will coach Lynne Roberts ease her into the rotation as she gains confidence in Martin's chemistry with the team? Tune into this matchup at 10:00 pm EST on NBA TV.
