Virginia Tech WBB Sophomore Forward, Kayl Petersen to Enter the Portal

Early Thursday morning, sophomore forward, Kayl Petersen announced on Instagram her plans to depart from Virginia Tech to enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.

Petersen's Beginnings as a Hokie

In her senior year of high school, Petersen was committed to play for Marquette under current Virginia Tech head coach, Megan Duffy until the coaching changes from Kenny Brooks to Duffy occurred in Blacksburg. The only freshman commit for Coach Duffy to move to Virginia Tech, Petersen showed promise. Standing at 6'0" at the forward position, Petersen was a little undersized for the Hokies, though she was able to make opponents work as she was fundamentally sound. In her freshman debut when the Hokies hosted UNC Wilmington, Petersen recorded a strong 12-point game accompanied by 3 rebounds on 71.2% shooting. This performance got Hokie Nation excited, and Petersen quickly became a fan favorite for Virginia Tech. Petersen would score in double figures three more times in her freshman season and finished averaging 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. Considering that she was playing behind senior forward, Rose Micheaux, this was a commendable stat line for a freshman who was expected to play in the Big East then playing in the powerhouse conference of the ACC.

Sophomore Season with Ups and Downs

With powerful forwards from Virginia Tech, Rose Micheaux and Matilda Ekh graduating after the 2024-2025 season, an opportunity opened for Petersen to step into their roles. Putting in relentless work in Blacksburg over the summer of 2025, Hokie Nation was pumped to see what Coach Duffy had cooking for Virginia Tech. Bringing in new faces such as Sophie Swanson, Kilah Freelon, and Mel Daley to play around the returning squad showed great potential for Duffy's group.

Despite not starting in the Hokies' first game of the 2025-2026 season, Petersen showed out for Virginia Tech against Towson. Coming off the bench as a backup for 6'1" forward, Kilah Freelon, Petersen made a name for herself that night as she dropped a 17-point 10-rebound double-double. With Freelon sustaining a concussion in this matchup with Towson, Petersen would go on to start the Hokies' second game of the season against Loyola Maryland, where she would contribute 10 points during 32 minutes of play. Despite starting off the first two games of the season strong, Petersen did not score in double figures for the rest of the season and her playing time would slowly decrease as freshman forward, Aniya Trent would carve a spot in the rotation. Petersen would then go to average just 2.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game on 10.7 minutes per game in the 2025-2026 season.

Petersen's Crucial Role

Although her stats did not always say it the best, Kayl Petersen played crucial minutes for the Hokies because of the determination and discipline she plays with. Petersen is often found doing the dirty work that some players skip over as they desire picture-perfect stats over class and effort. This hard work did not go unnoticed to Coach Duffy, or Virginia Tech fans as she was often commended for her great efforts and playing until the final whistle.

Though she won't be returning to Virginia Tech in the season to follow, Petersen will always be loved by Virginia Tech as she played a profound role in getting the team to the NCAA Tournament in 2026 due to her selflessness. Wherever Petersen lands, she will make a lasting impact beyond the court as she is just as outstanding of a person. As a Virginia Tech fan myself: Kayl, we will miss you and you have our love wherever you go.

Thank you, Kayl Petersen. #34
