Dallas Wings Star Rookie Azzi Fudd Ruled Out for Remainder of WNBA Season With Season-Ending Injury

Just as WNBA fans had gained hope in Azzi Fudd's return after missing the past five games for the Dallas Wings, the team announced earlier today that the 2026 No. 1 overall pick will not return for the remainder of the season.

Fudd's Historical Rookie Season Comes to an End

In the 30 games that Azzi Fudd competed in this season for the Dallas Wings, there's no doubt why she was taken with the No. 1 pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. Far beyond any statistics or averages, Fudd was the missing piece that the Wings have been looking for. In her rookie season, Fudd became one of the primary scorers as well as the leader of Dallas' defense. It was in this rookie season cut short that Fudd averaged 13.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. She did so while also shooting an average of 45.6% from the field, 39.7% from three, and 82.6% from the free-throw line. Not only do these stats and shooting splits prove Azzi Fudd's efficiency as she transitions to the pros, but also the way she can do it all on both ends of the court. Proving her permanent place in the league, Fudd would have several breakout games where she would not only record at least 20 points each night, but also contribute several steals and blocks, further displaying her elite defense. Beyond these stats and standout performances, Fudd would solidify herself as a menace on defense when she made history in just her first 20 games in the W. Fudd broke the record for the most steals and blocks by a rookie in their first 20 games in WNBA history with 35 steals and 20 blocks. Among rookies, Fudd is also first in three-pointers made, steals per game, and total steals, second in blocks per game, and fourth in total blocks. If this doesn't prove Fudd's pivotal role for the Dallas Wings as a leader on defense, I don't know what will. With all of her on court success aside though, Azzi Fudd is not just a spectacular basketball player, but also a spectacular teammate and person: something that goes beyond the box score.

A Season-Ending Setback

When the Injury First Emerged

On August 7, 2026, the Dallas Wings were set to face off against the Golden State Valkyries with hopes to bounce back from a hard loss to the Washington Mystics just two days prior. Intending to participate in this matchup, Azzi Fudd would warm up prior to game time, when things quickly changed. Reports came out just before tip-off that the Wings decided not to play Fudd in this matchup for extreme precaution as she began to experience soreness in her right knee. Concerned for Fudd as she has had numerous issues with this right knee in the past (with injuries such as a torn ACL, torn MCL, and torn meniscus), many fans had hoped that Fudd would simply take the needed rest and get back to action soon. While this was the hope for the Dallas Wings, Fudd would continue to miss the next four games following their matchup with the Valkyries.

Hope Fades After Fudd's Brief Return to Practice

As time went by, nobody knew Fudd's exact injury or timetable for return. Although it was noted that Fudd participated in a team practice approximately a week ago, nobody knew her exact status for the coming days and weeks until today. Despite the fact that fans were hopeful after hearing that Fudd had taken part in practice, that optimism quickly faded after she was ruled out for the remainder of the season earlier today. Per Alexa Philippou on X, "Breaking: Azzi Fudd will miss the remainder of the regular season and will undergo an arthroscopic procedure to address ongoing right knee soreness, the team announced." Although no details of Fudd's specific injury have been released, she is expected to begin rehab immediately and make a full recovery.

What Fudd's Absence Means for the Wings

Even in the midst of a terrible injury that cuts Azzi Fudd's record-breaking rookie season short, there are still some things on Dallas' side as they continue to face adversity. Fortunately for the Wings, they do have the second easiest schedule of games remaining in the season. However, the Wings start this final stretch of the regular season against the Indiana Fever tomorrow. Without Fudd to help shut down Indiana's Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark, Dallas will truly have to stay tight in the paint while also tracking players like Mitchell and Clark around the perimeter to prevent them from getting hot from beyond the arc. Alongside this void in their defense, the Wings will also be missing a major piece in their offense. On offense, Fudd was a player that allowed for floor spacing for the Wings as she required opponents to guard her further out due to her ability to knock down shots at any moment. Rather than attempting to replace Fudd in these areas, the Wings must collectively step up to have good ball movement and spacing by sharing the ball well and preventing as many turnovers as that has also been a recent struggle. Following their matchup with the Fever tomorrow, the Wings will continue their 6-game homestand in a matchup with the Seattle Storm, a matchup that should be promising for Dallas. The Dallas Wings will close the season facing teams such as the Portland Fire, Connecticut Sun, Los Angeles Sparks, and Phoenix Mercury (twice) with their final regular season matchup against the Seattle Storm again. Considering that the Wings need five wins to clinch a spot in the playoffs, can they make the most of their easy schedule despite missing Azzi Fudd?
