Breaking: 11x WNBA All-Star Nneka Ogwumike Announces Her Intentions to Retire After This Season

 

Yes, you read that right, Nneka Ogwumike has just announced that she will retire from basketball following the 2026 WNBA season. Now with this comes a lot. It brings sadness that one of the greatest careers is coming to an end, but it also brings an appreciation for all that Madam President has done, to which we can give Ogwumike her hard-earned flowers.

A Career Defined by Excellence

A Rookie Season That Set the Tone

From serving as the president of the Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), to breaking records and raking in accolades, Nneka Ogwumike has done so much for the WNBA and the position it is in today, but first, let's break down her career. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft, Nneka Ogwumike had all eyes on her when she landed on the Los Angeles Sparks. Coming off her best season yet at Stanford where she averaged 22.8 points, 10.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.2 blocks, taking Ogwumike with the first pick was a no-brainer for the Sparks and boy did it pay off. In her rookie season with LA, Ogwumike averaged 14.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. Because of this immediate success and she made a seamless transition, Ogwumike became the 2012 WNBA Rookie of the Year and also made the 2012 All-Rookie Team. What would be a huge milestone for many was just the start for Ogwumike and her career that would eventually go down as one of the best in WNBA history.

The Years That Cemented Her Legacy

Following her incredible rookie season came some of the best years of Ogwumike's career. In just her second season in the W, Ogwumike would earn her first honor as All-Star. Little did Ogwumike know at the time that she would become an 11x All-Star in her 15-year career. As Ogwumike's career gained traction in her first few seasons, she reached the pinnacle of her career in 2016. Not only was Ogwumike averaging the most points (19.7) and rebounds (9.1) of her career, but she would go on to not only win the 2016 WNBA MVP Award and even lead the Los Angeles Sparks to win the 2016 WNBA Finals. Achieving what every player dreams of by becoming a WNBA champion, Ogwumike could have settled down, but she wasn't finished yet. Ogwumike would continue to dominate the league for the next ten years. Although her final season with the Sparks is still in action, Ogwumike's career averages are 16.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.5 steals per game shooting 53.7% from the field, 37.1% from three, and 84.0% from the free-throw line in her career. If these shooting splits and career averages don't prove what a standout career Ogwumike has had, I don't know what will. 

The End of an Era

A complete shock to the entire women's basketball world, Nneke Ogwumike announced her intentions to retire from the WNBA in an exclusive interview with Boardroom. When asked about this subject, Ogwumike expressed the peace she feels in making this decision as it's on her own terms. Ogwumike also expressed how content she is with her career when she said, "I feel very fulfilled with the 15 years that I've been able to play and compete at such a high level." Ogwumike continued saying that she is proud to announce that she will be retiring after her fifteenth WNBA season with so much gratitude behind how far she has come in her career. What's Left in Ogwumike's Career?

 As the Los Angeles Sparks close out the rest of the 2026 season, it's nearly confirmed that they will not make a postseason run. Currently sitting at 12-23 record, the Sparks have faced a lot of adversity that is reflected in their wins compared to losses. From the injury and trading of Kelsey Plum to the day-to-day availability of Cameron Brink, LA hasn't had it easy. That said, what better way for Ogwumike to close this chapter of her life than the place where her professional career began. To close out her career, Ogwumike has nine games remaining on the schedule. Tomorrow (August 20), the Sparks look to take on the Atlanta Dream as they begin their 4-game homestand. Although the Sparks will be coming into this matchup as underdogs, Ogwumike has the opportunity to shine as she will be heavily relied on in the paint. Following this contest with Atlanta, the Sparks will face off against the Connecticut Sun before they face the Dream once again. As the Los Angeles Sparks look to close out this season and chapter with Nneka Ogwumike strong, one thing is sure regardless of the wins and losses and that is that Nneka Ogwumike has been one of the most pivotal players in the WNBA in its 30-year history.
