The Big 3: Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball’s Standout Players This Season

As the Virginia Tech Hokies have crossed the halfway point of the season, they have not only found what lineups work best, but who to go to in crunch time. Seeking to climb the ACC rankings, the Hokies are hungry to make their mark in one of the best women's basketball conferences in the country. Taking into consideration their consistency, reliability, and overall performance, the following three players are currently making the greatest impact for Virginia Tech this season.

3. Carleigh Wenzel, Guard

From experiencing a significant increase in minutes under the new coaching style of Coach Duffy last year, to now being able to comfortably play off the ball, Carleigh Wenzel has been one of the most consistent scoring factors for Virginia Tech. Not only is she averaging a smooth 12.7 points per game, but Wenzel has also found herself setting her team up with her passing ability. Wenzel's efficient efforts will play a huge part in the Hokies' success in future conference and potential postseason play.

2. Mackenzie Nelson, Guard

Virginia Tech's Mackenzie Nelson is currently one of the most prolific passers in women's college basketball. Ranked top 20 in both total assists and assists per game, as well as top 10 in assist/turnover ratio, Nelson has proved her role for the Hokies. Serving as the lead point guard, Nelson's ability to handle the ball alongside her composed demeanor allows the Hokies to find rhythm time and time again.

1. Carys Baker, Forward

At number one on this ranking is Carys Baker, a versatile forward with a lethal shot from behind the arc. Her ability to create space to put up jumpers while also fighting in the post for rebounds and tough buckets is impressive. Baker leads the Hokies in double-digit scoring games this season, scoring a season-high 23 points on two occasions. When searching for a spark in the offense, Baker is a go-to solution for Virginia Tech, providing years of experience that beautifully translates to the team's overall success.

Player to Watch:

A 6'3" freshman forward, Aniya Trent is one that Virginia Tech Head Coach Megan Duffy has relied on greatly in recent weeks. She has shown grit and determination to fight in the paint and make her presence known on the court. Trent's rise in playing time is also due to the lack of depth at the forward position. With sophomore forward Kayl Petersen injured and currently "day-to-day," it is likely that Coach Duffy will continue to maximize Trent and her height as conference play continues.
